چکیده

One of shortcomings of the dielectric wakefield accelerators (DWA) limiting the effective length of an acceleration is susceptibility of drive bunches to beam breakup (BBU) instability [1]. With the purpose to suppress this instability recently it has been proposed to fill the drift channel of dielectric structure with plasma of certain density [2]. The investigations of plasma DWA (PDWA) [2] were made for dielectric wakefield structures with homogeneous radial plasma density. Such consideration is right if plasma comes to the drift channel from external source. Other, widely way of plasma creation is capillary discharge. For this case on big times from the beginning of discharge (it is more than a half of pulse width of discharge current) steady distribution of plasma density with inhomogeneous distribution of discharge density forms [3]. At short distances from the axis a radial dependence of plasma density can be described with the parabolic dependence [3, 4]

Linear analysis of a finite length plasma-filled backward wave oscillator

Absolute instability in a plasma-filled backward wave oscillator with sinusoidally corrugated slow wave structure driven by an intense relativistic electron beam has been analyzed numerically. The maximum spatial growth rate of the plasma-filled waveguide is found to be larger than that of an optimally designed vacuum structure. The excitation of a finite length structure is investigated. Altho...

High-gradient Generation in Dielectric-loaded Wakefield Structures*

Dielectric loaded wakefield structures have potential to be used as high gradient accelerator components. Using the high current drive beam at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator Facility, we employed cylindrical dielectric loaded wakefield structures to generate accelerating fields of up to 86 MV/m, at 10 GHz. Short electron bunches of up to 86 nC are used to drive these fields, either as single...

The Surface Roughness Wakefield Effect

In the Linear Colliders FEL projects ultra short bunches are foreseen to be used. In addition to usual wakefields, coming from irregularities in the chamber, these bunches excite fields in transporting lines and undulators due to the surface roughness. This effect can be large for the extruded tubes, usually used in accelerators. Based on computer results it is shown, that the roughness wakefie...

Long-Range Wakefields and Split-Tune Lattice at the SLC

At the SLC, a train consisting of one positron bunch fo l lowed by two electron bunches is accelerated in the linac, each separated by about 60 ns. Long-range transverse wakef ields from the leading bunch were found to cause up to a factor o f three increase in beam jitter for the trailing bunches. Incoming jitter is efficiently damped by BNS damping, but excitations in the middle of the linac ...

Observation of acceleration and deceleration in gigaelectron-volt-per-metre gradient dielectric wakefield accelerators

There is urgent need to develop new acceleration techniques capable of exceeding gigaelectron-volt-per-metre (GeV m(-1)) gradients in order to enable future generations of both light sources and high-energy physics experiments. To address this need, short wavelength accelerators based on wakefields, where an intense relativistic electron beam radiates the demanded fields directly into the accel...
